Named for George Corliss who invented the Corliss steam invention in the 1850s. A steam engine factory once stood a few blocks away where Home Depot currently resides. A crucial development of the 19th century, the Corliss steam engine was more efficient and reduced industry's reliance on reliable water sources (Wikipedia).
