Speaker Series: Astrophysics at the EcoTarium

Speaker: Meg Davis, University of Connecticut May 10, 2025 5:00 pm – 5:40 pm Our Cosmic Gentle Giants: Supermassive Black Holes Supermassive black holes are the most massive singular objects in our universe. As they don’t emit their own radiation (light), we must observe them by how they affect their environments. With these indirect observations come many questions: How do we know that we’ve actually found them? How did they get so big?

Our Cosmic Gentle Giants: Supermassive Black Holes

Supermassive black holes are the most massive singular objects in our universe. As they don’t emit their own radiation (light), we must observe them by how they affect their environments. With these indirect observations come many questions: How do we know that we’ve actually found them? How did they get so big? What do noodles have to do with gravity and black holes? Meg will discuss the answers to these questions and more, including active areas of astrophysical research, in her talk about these gentle celestial giants.

Meg Davis has been interested in astronomy since she was a child. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics from Michigan State University in 2019. She will receive her PhD in Physics from the University of Connecticut in May 2025 and is quite thrilled to be Dr. Meg! For her research, she is searching the universe for elusive binary supermassive black hole pairs. In her free time, she reads a lot of science fiction and fantasy novels, creates stained glass art, and loves to travel. Her favorite planet is Saturn.
