Homeschool day has a rotating series of programs and workshops geared for ages 4+ that bring the historic world to life. This program is for advanced sign-up only and includes the cost of admission. It also features a variety of self-guided activities for all ages.

Session 1: 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. ($10 per participant)

Woodworking – Happy Hedgehogs (Ages 4+)

Greetings, young woodworkers! Come and join us on the farm to learn about the basics of woodworking! Read a fun woodworking story, learn about the historic tools we have on our farm, and put your skills to the test by making a fun wooden friend to take home with you – a happy wooden HEDGEHOG!

*A parent or guardian must stay with their child through this program.

World of Worms (Ages 7+)

Learn about Coggeshall’s composting beds and the importance of worms, bugs, and other decomposers!  Take a look inside the pile and see who is helping us break things down so the compost can be used again in the garden the next year.

Flax to Fiber (Ages 10+)

Learn about the process of turning the flax plant into a fiber that can be weaved into cloth.  Try out the flax break to separate the parts of the plants and later remove the fibers on the hackle. Finish off with some flax fiber ready for spinning.

BREAK: 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Try out some historic games in between classes in the Coggeshall Work Yard! Free for all class participants. (This will be an independent activity not led by an instructor; pre-registration not required).

Session 2: 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. ($10 per participant)

Migration Madness (Ages 4+)

It’s that time of year when animals start to move to follow their food to warmer areas.  We will take a look around the farm for signs of migration.  We will head to the pollinator garden to find any final caterpillars, butterflies, and bugs.  Finish off your search with a fun craft to take home.

*A parent or guardian must stay with their child through this program.

Discovering Dairy Goats (Ages 7+)

Join us with our goats, Phil, Tank, and Poni Boy, and learn about how and what goats eat and their care. We’ll walk with goats and witness how a “browser” eats and how that’s different from their livestock cousins, the sheep.

*Participants are required to wear closed-toed-shoes for this program. Boots are recommended.

Fire-Starting (Ages 10+)

Fire was an essential part of everyday life in the 18th century. This is how you would cook your food, wash your clothes, and more. Come to the farm to learn about the fundamental survival skill of starting a fire. Once we’ve started our fire we’ll celebrate with a fire-cooked snack – S’MORES!
