RISD: Adventures in Drawing

Artist Keith Haring once said, "Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic." Young artists discover the nature of that magic, as they take command of the marks they make, and are provided with thorough grounding in the basics of drawing and sketching. Assignments utilize a rich array of drawing materials, while expanding on traditional subject matter: still lifes, landscapes and portraits, as students explore the range of observational and abstract mark-making. This course takes them to visit the RISD Nature Lab and RISD Museum as students experience a hands-on adventure in drawing.

RISD: Keeping the Castle

Art meets history meets science, as kids visualize a medieval kingdom and its centerpiece: the castle. Lessons in scale model building start the session as students construct walls, moats and galleries. Students build their own simple machines: catapults for launching projectiles at the walls they've made, followed by the design of cranes and towers needed to rebuild their scale model fortress. Students visualize the kings, queens, knights, farmers and animals found inside and outside the walls and the faires, festivals and tournaments (with jousting matches!) that are the most fun in an imagined castle community.
